a fresh color palette

Exposed Elements

I came up with this color palette while redesigning my other website, www.exposedelements.com. For this project, I decided to try to come up with a fresh and modern color palette.

The inspiration behind this palette comes from many years of admiration for the hex color #FCAA01. If you don’t know what the heck I’m talking about, please continue reading.

I’ve been a fan of the oranges and yellows for years, but if I had to choose just one, it would definitely be #FCAA01.

Description

I started with #FCAA01 (the light orange), from there I moved to the other side of the color wheel and played with light tones.

Feel free to use this palette in your own works. Here are the details:

Seattle Towncar

Seattle Towncar websiteI haven’t said anything about my latest project with Seattle Towncar because the project wasn’t complete yet; but as of this week seattletowncar.net is open for business on the web; and it was designed by me of course.

I’ll be adding this piece to my digital portfolio soon.

digital portfolio

My digital portfolio is currently unavailable; this is mostly due to the fact that my portfolio website (exposedElements.com) was designed to run on a Windows web server — and as of today, I’ve canceled my Windows hosting account.

The way I see it, I have several options.

  • Move my portfolio to another Windows hosting account
  • Use Microsoft FrontPage Server Extension on Linux
  • Create a new portfolio website that runs on Linux

I haven’t decided yet, so I’ll be thinking about my options. If anyone has a thought or suggestion, I’d like to hear it.

Open Source Toolbox for web designers

Rich McIver emailed me about a blog post that should be of interest to anyone that creates content for the web.

The Open Source Web Design Toolbox: 100 Tools, Resources, and Template Sources

His list is loaded with quick blurbs on some of the most popular open source projects.
It’s a great blog post — and rumor has it that it has made it to the frontpage of digg.

blog migration

I’m getting ready to migrate my Wordpress blog to another server. The new server runs Red Hat Linux and is much better suited to handle web traffic than my current homemade server.

Migrations can be a pain in the ass if you don’t anticipate the worst, so with that in mind, I’m preparing to go to war, so to speak. My plan includes:

  • create Wordpress website (at new location)
  • backup files & theme (at old site)
  • backup database & tables
  • restore database & tables (at new location)
  • restore files & theme
  • change domain server name (point to new location)

These steps should produce a Wordpress migration without any disruption in service what so ever. Of course this is only a plan and you should have a backup plan in case you run into trouble. One thing is for sure, Copy and Paste is not an option for me.

Roller Coaster Mix

Today, I submitted my entry for the Mix conference contest.

Here is my REMIX:
Roller Coaster Mix

The Mix conference website is also hosting all the contest entries in a gallery. There are some really good designs as well as funny ones — definitely worth a few minutes.
