Windows Mobile 6

I recently upgraded my mobile phone (Cingular 8525) to run WM6! The most exciting feature for me is HTML e-mail; now I can see all those embedded pictures in full glory

My phone feels brand new again!

Opera Mobile 8.65 BETA

This week I’m trying out the latest bits from Opera. Opera 8.65 for Windows Mobile BETA.

Opera Mobile

My favorite feature so far is the Tabbed browsing. But as I previously wrote Mozilla Minimo already had this feature with their 0.2 version.

I may have to ditch pocket IE because of their lack of support for javascript. This browser on the other hand, does a fantastic job processing javascript (yes, I double checked!).

Unfortunately, I only have until Oct 1st to enjoy this beta.

mobile browsing with Minimo

Today I rediscovered Mozilla’s mobile web browser, Minimo (version 0.2). This version is a big improvement over version 0.1.

I really like how they’ve brought the tab browsing experience from the desktop — to mobile devices. Great job guys!

Somehow AT&T managed to cripple my data plan and currently blocks pocket IE and Opera Mini from accessing the internet, but Minimo seems to be unaffected.

So until they figure it out, I’ll be using Minimo exclusively.

Fake bluetooth headsets

The PhoneArena team posted an article called Counterfeit Headsets - How to recognize and avoid them; what are the differences?

I immediately checked my Jabra JX10 and guess what — yep. it’s fake. What a bummer; at least this explains why I was having performance issues with the headset.

Opera Mini to the rescue

I have been toying with creating a mobile web application for personal use, and I’m at a point where it is starting to become useful. My web app is called “Seattle AA Meeting Locator”.

My goal is to be able to find a meeting around the Seattle area from my mobile device; this way, when I am out and about, I can just look it up without having to lug around a laptop or find a WiFi signal. This little web holds approx 1300 records in a database; which can be quite powerful when you need to find a meeting in a pinch.

While testing my newly created website with Microsoft’s IE Mobile browser, I discovered that IE was preventing some of my code to run. It rendered the page, but no action. What a bummer!

Then I decided to test it with Opera Mini and things worked as expected. I still ended up with an alignment issue, but that is very minor and common for mobile browsers. On Opera, the application manages to display the meetings and calls up the next page when a user makes a selection.
Opera MiniI am really surprised that IE Mobile doesn’t render my application correctly, especially since I am using ASP.NET and built this whole app with Microsoft Expression Web Designer.

Here is a picture of my mobile app on Opera Mini.

Mobile computing with HTC TyTN (Cingular 8525)

HTC TyTN I recently got my hands on the HTC TyTN (Cingular 8525). This device is the latest broadband Pocket PC Phone to hit the U.S. all the way from Taiwan!

The HTC Cingular 8525 has all the bells and whistles that you want in a mobile phone and then some. For instance it runs Windows Mobile 5 and has your typical productivity apps like Internet Explorer, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Windows Media Player, etc. It’s also packed with WiFi, Bluetooth & a 2 megapixel camera. I also added a 1GB micro SD storage card so I can download more fun apps to this little device.

I am starting to like this whole mobile computing age. Next, I would like to try to connect to my Linux server and be able to manipulate my files remotely, but 1st, I gotta get my FTP server configured.
