animator vs. animation

I found this really cool animation while catching up on RSS feeds today. Alan Becker created the 1st Animator vs. Animation back in 2006 and has taken it to the next level with part 2.

He takes the Adobe Flash user interface and uses it as his canvas to create a very entertaining flash movie.

using virtual earth v6

Here is another stab at using Virtual Earth to plot an address. Go ahead and drag the map around the screen and zoom in & out; you can also switch to Road or Bird’s eye view.
I plan to do a few more things with Virtual Earth over the next few weeks, so stay tuned.

Here is the code if you want to try this at home.

vector graphics with open source

I’m in the process of creating new business cards and want to do it using open source software. I must admit that it’s hard to resist booting into Windows and firing up Adobe Illustrator because I can probably get the vector graphic done in half the time, but that’s not the point here.

So — what are my options as far as open source vector programs? I plan to test 2 programs for my project

Inkscape
An Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities similar to Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Xara X, using the W3C standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format.

Xara Xtreme
Xara Xtreme for Linux is a powerful, general purpose graphics program for Unix platforms including Linux, FreeBSD and (in development) OS-X.

I am interested in finding out what other people are using to create vector graphics. Please post a comment if you have any suggestions for open source programs. I will follow up with comps from each program.

web browser detection

Priyadi Iman has written a WordPress Browser Detection Plugin, that is just awesome. The plugin detects a users browser and operating system and displays the corresponding icons when the user writes a comment.

Take a look at this example:
browser detection

Why do I care about anyones browser or operating system? well, I have a few reasons…

  • As a web developer, it is my job to care about these things
  • I need to know which browsers people are using to ensure a good experience when building sites.
  • just plain curiosity (scratching an itch)

internet browsers

It’s been 3 months since I rolled out the Seattle Towncar website and it’s exciting to see it grow every month.

Browser Stats

While checking some browser stats the other day, I was reminded of the simple fact that there are many internet browsers out there. See for yourselves: Konqueror, Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera & Safari.

The only browser I don’t see on this list yet is Seamonkey, although I’m probably missing more…

more social networking

I had almost forgotten about myspace, until today. My inbox showed a “New MySpace Message” from and old friend that I knew as a teenager.

It’s always good to hear from friends, but it’s a real treat to hear from friends from those times — when life was simpler and you didn’t worry about projects or deadlines. This was a good reminder for me to 1) update my myspace profile and 2) open up the lines of communication with social networking sites such as myspace.

In an effort to open those lines of communication, I will share with you my myspace profile page. (still needs updating)
