Art by Cy Porter

One of the greatest things about having a day off is being able to visit with friends when everyone else is at work. The other day, I met with my good friend Cy.

Cy is a street painter and you can find him most days at Victor Steinbruech Park located in downtown Seattle. He is always so gracious to everyone that stops to see his work and generally a happy fellow.

He is currently working on a graphic novel that he plans to work on for many years; you can see his progress on his website, www.lookingid.com.

Below is an example of the type of work you can expect to see from him. (I got to keep this one — thanks Cy!)

camping in Belfair

AnaLuisa and I just got back from a camping trip with my family (read: no computers for a whole weekend).

We went to Belfair, WA. (located on the coast) because we wanted to make sure there was a beach involved in the camping experience . I’ve posted a few photos on Flickr. I will post the rest soon.

kick ass interactive art

I am on vacation this week, so I decided to check out some art around Seattle. Today I went downtown to see “interactivity” at the McLeod Residence.

The space inside looks and feels very much like a house or apartment, but don’t let that fool you. They had a screen with a web cam in the lobby that I happen to touch; a few minutes later I found out that it took pictures of the person touching it and uploaded them to Flicker automatically. here I am.

Soon after that, I met Lele McLeod who handed me a map of the place which came in handy. There is so much art inside that it is easy to miss something spectacular if you’re not paying attention. The bathroom for example had an LCD screen for a mirror.

All in all, I was very pleased with my visit to the McCleod Residence; which reminds me that I need to make an effort seek out more art, more often. I always end up having a good time and feeling energized.

I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to experience high-tech art in Seattle. Even though I don’t drink, I would love to go back at night to hang out in the neon-lighted lounge area.

Looking back after one year of using Linux

I’ve been using Linux for about a year now so I thought I’d write a quick blurb about my experience so far.

I decided to start with Novel’s openSUSE to run my own web server. The server setup was easy thanks to Yast. A few months later, I switched my desktop PC from a beta copy of Windows Vista to Fedora Core 6. This is now my main computer at home. A couple of months after that, I installed Ubuntu on my laptop.

Maintaining 3 different Linux systems in the course of one year has given me a pretty good understanding of a typical Linux system. I have a great deal of appreciation for all the people who contribute to these projects.

Will I continue to use Linux? yes, absolutely! and I plan give back to the community as I learn more.
